==============================================================================
"TOM" is (C)opyright 1990-92 by Andreas R. Kleinert
and may be freely distributed. A payment of the SHARE-fee is
welcomed, but not "forced". A possibly amount as a copy-fee per disk
should not be higher than $7.5 (10 DM) or five as much as the price
for the empty disk (all restrictions made in older versions of TOM
does are no longer valid !). SUPPORTED by me is a fee which is just
as high as the costs of the distributor are.
TOM may not be distributed divided into parts (only complete) !!!
Parts of TOM are :
- this Doc-File
- the other content of this directory, if marked as a part of TOM.
----- Docfile-Version : V2.00a-A-1203-92 -----
=============================================================================
= DESCRIPTION : =
=============================================================================
TOM is a Mini-Translation-Program for a quick single-word translation
from English to German and reverse.
The vocabulary is easy to complete.
TOM is also able to be started from the CLI (Shell) as well as from the
Workbench (then via a special integrated, comfortable Intuition-inter-
face).
The Intuition-interface is also accessable from the CLI, when starting
TOM without any parameters.
TOM is a shortcut for "Translate-O-Mat".
=============================================================================
= ATTENTION : =
=============================================================================
THIS PROGRAM IS SHAREWARE !!!
- What does that mean in this case ?
If you often use this program, please pay the SHARE-fee of $7.5 (DM 15)
to my address. But this is fully voluntarily (this is the reason why
this program has not to be called "commercial") !!!
When you have paid the fee, you may at a time get the the latest version
from me by sending me enough money for postage/packing and an empty disk.
Please wait at least two or three months before asking for the next ver-
sion update.
This offer is then obsolete and ends, when I'm no longer able (no
matter what reason) to manage the many requests for this program to the
conditions desribed above.
- What will happen, if this offer does no longer stand sometime in the
future ?
Alternatives then :
a) No more enhancements to the program will be made.
(Possible, but not realistic.)
or :
b) This program could be distributed as a kind of COMMERCIAL Shareware,
maybe with better conditions for the people, who already paid the
voluntary Share-fee.
or :
c) This program could be selled as a completely commercial product.
Summary :
If somebody sent me - AFTER becoming this offer obsolete - $7.5 + disk
+ PP, then I'll send all that back, by using the necessary part of the
PP (disk empty), and I'll add an information containing all might be
interested in about the new version of the program (status a,b,c,?).
I also would send the PP and the disk back to the people who already
paid the SHARE-fee sometime before, but maybe for this people together
with a special offer (as described under b) ) for the new version of the
program.
But this is currently all not in a realistic view. I also don't think
that this program now is good enough to have a realistic chance as
a commercial (Share-)Ware.
So think about sponsoring the (voluntarily) Shareware-idea, without
any risks ($7.5 is not much) and get the possibilitie to get quick and
easy updates, directly from the programmer (without any bad changes made
to the original) !
- Necessary information I have to get :
- Current version of the program you own, so that I see, if an update
is already (still) possible or makes sense.
- Your telefon number, full address and BBS.

= INSTALLATION : =
=============================================================================
Copy the latest version of the "ak_gen0.library" into your LIBS:-direc-
tory !
For a correct working with TOM you have to make some installations be-
fore using it :
At first create a logical device named "DATA:", where TOM may search
for his "vocabulary". This can happen with the ASSIGN-command from the
Workbench (or anywhere else, never mind).
The directory, on which "DATA:" has to point, lies on this disk and
contains the data TOM uses (Files "a" to "z").
Perhaps you will copy this files to your RAM-Disk for an increasement
of speed.
Exmaple :
ASSIGN DATA: DF0:TOM/DATA
ASSIGN DATA: RAM:DATA
ASSIGN DATA: RAM:
=============================================================================
= HOW TO USE : =
=============================================================================
(1) Use from Workbench :
(No explanation necessary, I think.
(2) Use from the CLI/Shell :
The way of translating a word :
--- from English to German :
TOM <englisch word> -g
--- von Deutsch nach Englisch :
TOM <deutsches Wort> -e
(For some examples look some lines downward.)
Substantives, which are similar to adjectives or adverbs are defined
as "the_<word>" instead of "<word>", which is then the adjective/adverb.
If a word is not stored in the archiv, TOM prints out an error message,
telling this to you. The same happens, if you forgot to assign the
logical device "DATA:", or if you used it as an alias for the wrong di-
rectory.
Translating an german word into english needs a little bit more time than
doing it reverse, because of the structure of the data-files (e -> g).
If you're using TOM from the CLI, you may control the searching process
by watching the messages, which are given out by TOM (when translating
to german). They tell you, which data-file is currently scanned.
Here are some exmaples for correct use :
At first : assign DATA: <???>
Exp. (1) [G -> E] :
Input : "TOM airplane -g"
Output : "--- airplane == flugzeug ---"
Exp. (2) [E -> G] :
Input : "TOM flugzeug -e"
Output : "--- flugzeug == airplane ---"
TIP :
The string-gadgets may be erased by using the key combination
<CTRL-X>.
